Atlantic Coast Conference

Clemson
Duke
Georgia Tech

This is basically the ACC I grew up with and all 8 teams are in states along the Atlantic.

Big 8 Conference

Colorado
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

8 teams in a conference called the Big 8.

Big Ten Conference

Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Northwestern
Ohio State
Purdue
Wisconsin

10 teams in a conference called the Big Ten.

Mid-American Conference

Ball State
Bowling Green
Central Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Kent State
Miami-OH
Northern Illinois
Ohio
Toledo
Western Michigan

All of these teams are currently in the Mid-American.

Missouri Valley Conference I-A Members
Tulsa
Wichita State

The other teams, Drake, Illinois State, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, and West Texas State were all I-AA teams at the time. West Texas State is now West Texas A&M and are D2.

Pacific Coast Athletic Association

CSU Fullerton
Fresno State
Long Beach State
NM State
Pacific
San Jose State
UNLV
Utah State

The PCAA would change its identity to the Big West in 1988 which made more sense. Somehow, the league would serve as a precursor to the Sun Belt in terms of football. CSU Fullerton, Long Beach State, and Pacific no longer have football programs.

Pacific-10 Conference

Arizona
Arizona State
California
Oregon
Oregon State
Southern Cal
Stanford
UCLA
Washington
Washington State

The classic Pac-10, with 10 teams.

Southeastern Conference

Alabama
Auburn Cheats
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
LSU
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

The SEC prior to Arkansas and South Carolina being added in 1992.

Southwest Conference

Arkansas
Baylor
Houston
Rice
SMU
TCU
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech

SMU's death penalty hadn't hit yet and the Razorbacks were starting to hate spending so much time in Texas every year.

Western Athletic Conference

Air Force
BYU
Colorado State
Hawaii
New Mexico
San Diego State
Utah
UTEP
Wyoming

The WAC had stability which started to die about a decade or so later.

Independent I-A Members

Army
Boston College
Cincinnati
East Carolina
Florida State
Louisville
Memphis State
Miami-FL
Navy
Notre Dame
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
South Carolina
Southern Miss
Syracuse
Temple
Tulane
USL
Virginia Tech
West Virginia

Before the Big East decided they wanted a football league, there were quite a few independents who liked scheduling each other annually. Memphis State is now Memphis. USL is now Louisiana after being known for a time as UL Lafayette. Notre Dame is still technically independent.
